Professor Tianshu Sun currently holds the position of Professor of Technology and Operations and Distinguished Dean's Chair Professor at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB). He also serves as the Academic Director of the Entrepreneur Scholar DBA Program and the Director of the Center for Digital Transformation at CKGSB. Prior to joining CKGSB, Professor Sun held a tenured faculty position at the University of Southern California (USC), where he was the Robert Dockson Chair Professor and supervised doctoral students in USC Marshall School of Business and USC Viterbi School of Engineering.
Professor Sun's research integrates artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with business design, focusing on the "AI asset restructuring" of enterprises and industries. His specific areas of interest include AI business architecture, AI digital transformation, AI intelligent organizations, AI talent systems, data assets, as well as business digital strategies and technologies. He has extensive work experience and collaborative practice with leading companies in China and the United States, such as Facebook, Adobe, and Groupon, implementing data science, AI algorithms, and digital business design across various enterprise scenarios. His academic research and industry practice particularly emphasize the intersection of AI technologies and business, exploring how large AI models, AI agents, big data, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and embodied intelligence continually transform industries like retail and fast-moving consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, finance, smart manufacturing, food and beverage, lifestyle services, and enterprise services.
Professor Sun has been invited to deliver over 80 academic presentations at top universities (including Harvard, MIT, Wharton School, University of Chicago, and Stanford) and international academic conferences. He has also shared his expertise on AI applications, digital transformation, data assets, and platform strategies at leading organizations such as Facebook, Google, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Uber, Alibaba, CITIC, and the People's Daily Group. His research papers have been published in top international journals and conferences across information systems, machine learning, economics, and business disciplines, earning him 16 best paper awards, including the Wittink Prize for the best paper of the year awarded by the University of Chicago, as well as the Golden Apple Award for the best professor of the year at USC. Professor Sun serves on the editorial boards of several top international journals (such as Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, and Manufacturing & Service Operations Management) and has been a co-chair for international conferences (including CIST and WEBEIS). He has received research support from multiple leading institutions, and his doctoral students have secured faculty positions at universities like UIUC, Queens, ASU, and SCU. Additionally, the research assistants and graduate students he has mentored have pursued doctoral studies at institutions such as MIT, Wharton School, Cornell, University of Minnesota, and HKUST.
Professor Sun earned his bachelor's degree from the Department of Physics at Nanjing University. He pursued doctoral studies in physics, electrical engineering, and economics at the University of Maryland, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Information Systems.
